Melting Face charmingly merges elements of indie rock, post-punk and neo-psychedelia in a combination that is far from face-melting, but rather catchy and well-crafted.

PEACH MELBA are a breeze of fresh air for even the most seasoned garage rock fan, combining the energetic noise rock of Fuzz and Meatbodies with the signature loud-quiet dynamics of the Pixies. Melting Face is a collection of eight tracks that don’t take themselves too seriously, while showing some serious dedication to the fun of playing in a band.

band

Started in 2017 as a synth-post-rock quartet with Sebastien Laudage playing guitars, Sophie Tritschler playing cello, and Mortiz Ermen-Bausch (DAEVAR) playing drums. For the recording of their debut album, Sophie taught herself to play bass, facilitating a transition to the more riff-oriented songwriting of Sebastien who wrote most of the material.

Melting Face charmingly merges elements of indie rock, post-punk and neo-psychedelia in a combination that is far from face-melting, but rather catchy and well-crafted. PEACH MELBA show themselves masters of songwriting, building tension in form but keeping loose in execution. The songwriting and playing is unembellished and pure, mostly relying on band dynamic and only using ornament where necessary.

Moritz’ artful righty-tighty, lefty-loosey-playing gently carries the album’s atmospheric moments, while effortlessly propelling the band’s outbursts to affecting levels of intensity. Sebastian’s guitar playing is hearkens back to the fuzz-laden leads of the sixties and is marked with an orientalism that gently leans into pastiche. Sophie’s self-taught ethos, embedded in the aura of two experienced players, grants Melting Face sense of youthful excitement.

The production, handled by Jan Oberg at Hidden Planet Studios, is charmingly honest and ties in with the albums easy-going nature. “Most guitar tracks were not doubled,” explains drummer Moritz about the recording process of Melting Face. “The band chose not to add artificial layers, aiming for a raw, personal sound.” The crunchy outbursts are artfully interspersed with the combination of Sebastian’s twangy Stratocaster and Sophie’s hollow mid-tones.
All edges on Melting Face seem to have been filed down, but somehow it adapts really well to your speaker system of choice. Over noise cancelling headphones Melting Face sounds well-rounded and intimate, over the car system it sounds grittier and more direct. It’s an album you can take anywhere you go, and it will keep you listening!

The attention to detail, as can be expected from a TLD record, is incredible and every repeated play will reveal another part of this band’s unique sound and ethos. PEACH MELBA combine the youthful excitement and energy of budding garage rock bands with well-crafted melodies that will have you humming along in no time. Melting Face is a breeze of fresh air for even the most seasoned garage rock fan, proving the days of riff-oriented music are long from over!
